The Salt Ledger

Canon

The master book of Saltcairn. Every binding vow is copied here in a hand small enough that the tide cannot wash it.

The Ledger is not the original of any vow. Originals are salt tablets, stored in felt-lined niches. The Ledger is the index: who swore, which gallery holds the tablet, and which calendar the sea used that night. Maera Vell is the current clerk. She will not write a name she has not heard spoken. She will not open the lower gallery for anyone who still owes a true name. A cracked tablet is not thrown away. The crack is the record of the break. The Ledger notes the fracture, the hour of the third bell, and whether the sea has kept what a person would not.
